THE CEREMONY
We chose a purely civil ceremony, mainly by default. However, it was what we both preferred anyway, so despite some snags in finding an officiant, it worked out in our favor.
We also chose to have live ceremony music, played by persons very special to me, John King and Arturo Tappin. Arturo is a first class sax player, mainly jazz/reggae fusion. We have been friends since I met and interviewed him for a feature about four years ago. For the processional, 'Turo played "Fly me to the Moon" on flute, which he plays almost as well as the sax.
John King and Eric became fast friends almost immediately after Eric moved here. John is a singer, primarily reggae/blues and calypso. Eric and John chose "With Every Beat of My Heart" by Stevie Wonder for John's solo piece during the ceremony and 'Turo accompanied him on flute. For the recessional, John invited the guests to join him in singing Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds", which the audience did with gusto. 'Turo, again, glissed through the song on flute.
Our wedding party was a small one; Matron of Honor, my best friend Cheryl Collard; Best Man, our good friend Clayton Maynard; Father giver, my long-standing dear friend Senator C. Keith Laurie and the Flower Girl, Jenny Reader and Ring Bearer Owen Reader, are the children of personal friends of ours, Dr. Gus and Debbie Reader.
Eric and I chose to have Matron of Honor, Cheryl and Best Man, Clayton participate in the proceedings with a recitation of the Apache Wedding Prayer at the end of the ceremony. It proved to be a very touching rendering.
We also had an address, written by a very dear friend of Eric's, Rev. Lee Lawhead and read by Minister of State, Senator Glyne Murray in Lee's place since Lee himself was unable to attend the event. Lee's speech encompassed the lighting of the Unity candle.
Lee's speech is on the site so you can read it, as well as the Apache Wedding Prayer.
